Aston Villa, Hatters Hostel Birmingham

Aston Villa are the Premier League’s FORM team, going into the Christmas programme. They’ve won the last three of an unbeaten six and are up to third in the table. Villa are making a concerted effort to secure Champions League football next season, and victory would give them a six point advantage over visiting Arsenal, but defeat would see the Gunners leapfrogging them.

Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish isn’t worried at seeing his side drop out of the Championship top two for the first time since August. Reading leapfrogged Blues into second place following their 3-1 win at St Andrews on Saturday but the boss says time is still on his players’ side.

Let’s hope they get their act together and we can see a proper Birmingham Derby next year in the Top Flight

So you’ve booked a cheap Ryanair flight to our wonderful Birmingham for New Year’s Eve?

Of course you know where to stay, but no clue where to go for the party?

Let’s see what is on around the Hatters!

The first suggestion is for those who prefer to stay close to their bed: The NYE Party at our favourite place the Actress & Bishop! – It’s only £5 to get in, nothing is specifically planned, but expect the place to be packed. DJs playing good music to entertain you and a great atmosphere. And the best thing: it’s only a 2 minutes walk away from your warm and comfy bed at the Hatters! Second best thing: I might be there! Too boring? You want something more special? Alright, then lets move on to some of the BIG parties in town. Everybody claims it’s the “biggest night of the year” and is trying to attract people, so let’s see what all the venues have to offer! Rock fans might enjoy the Carling Academy’s NYE special. Their two popular weekly events Ramshackle and Subculture will join up for a huge party with DJs in two areas playing a mix of indie, pop, punk, ska and rock & metal classics. If you arrive early and are lucky to be among the first 100 guests you’ll get a free glass of champagne and access to the VIP area. Tickets are £10, but you can try and win a pair here. Another option for indie lovers is the party at Snobs, Birmingham’s famous alternative nightclub. For the usual £5 they promise cheap drink prices and are open till 4 am, one hour longer than normally. Island Bar and the recently reopened The Victoria have organised a joint event to make your evening more interesting. They promise you a fantastic night in either venue with DJs playing the best of indie, funk, soul, electro and 80s and there will also be live art from Them Lot. A fiver gets you into both venues and you can decide for yourself which place you like best. They are only a minute away from each other, so if you’re not sure which place you prefer you could as well have one beer in the Island Bar, one beer in the Victoria, one in the Island Bar, one in the Victoria, …. A massive event is taking place in Digbeth, where The Rainbow presents the NYE Street Festival. There will be 7 different indoor and (heated & covered) outdoor arenas, but you buy one ticket for £20 and can explore them all – the whole night until 5 am on New Years Day! Well-known DJs are playing different music ranging from indie to electro, disco to dubstep, hip hop to house, techno to 80’s pop and much more, plus there will be various other special features to be discovered, too. Next door to that, the Custard Factory hosts its own big party with three arenas featuring popular DJs to entertain you. They will also have cocktail bars, food stalls, heated & seated outdoor areas and a “café chat room”. General tickets are £ 32.50 and more information can be found here. An exciting event for fans of rave, house and d&b music is the Fantazia NYE party at the Que Club. It will be a huge party with 3000 people and as many as 9 arenas! For £35 you can dance the night away till 6 in the morning or entertain yourself with some of the other things they offer, like a small fun fair and all kinds of stalls from food to merchandise. Look up their website for detailed information.

All events are within walking distance from the Hatters (or alternatively it is only a few quid for a taxi) and if you ask nicely we are happy to provide you with all the information that you will need about all the parties!

Whatever option you choose, we hope you have a wonderful start into the New Year 2009!

10361064ecard-sg-stockingsIt’s Christmas time yay!  I am suitably cozy, having drunk the local Frankfurt Markets out of mulled wine  these last two weeks, I am sure. Birmingham city is all hustle and bustle with people racing around doing last minute shopping, before Christmas Eve finally sets…so what are your plans for the night before the big day??? If you’re stuck for ideas or simply haven’t had the time to come up with any, here are a couple of cool things going on in Birmingham! Nicole’s Pub is hosting ‘The Secret Christmas Party’!  This is a night of spontaneous awesome music making and madness.  Entry and yummy mince pies are free!! Plus they’re serving mulled wine and many other delights.  Nicole’s ‘Secret Christmas Party’ is only two minutes around the corner from Hatters Birmingham so…lucky I told you huh?nicole-chr-eve

And there’s plenty of fun to be had at The Flapper and Firkin!  They will be cranking it all night long, with the bar open til 1am Christmas morning!   The Flapper have great drinks, including real ales – plus entry is free.
