May seems to be high season for festivals in Manchester. Right now there are two of them happening: Kino International Short Film Festival is screening various short films throughout the week. Some screenings are free and others you will have to pay for. It started on the 26th so most of the program is done but you still have the weekend to watch loads of exciting shorts from all over the world! Dubus – Music based short from Russia MAPS, the northern quarter creative arts festival, is on this weekend as well with plenty of gigs, exhibitions and circus workshops (!). Headlining is Brighton indie rock band Doll & The Kicks. Another exciting festival coming up in Manchester this month is FutureEverything, formerly known as the FutureSonic festival. They are offering a wide range of concerts, club nights, art exhibitions, conferences and much more. Events worth giving some extra attention is the previously mentioned Animal Collective screening and the event called Dirty Electronics where you build your own electronic instrument from scratch and after taking part of the performance get to take it with you home!

Next weekend Birmingham goes badminton crazy again welcoming The Yehlex Birmingham Badminton Bonanza 2009 to The NIA.

A Badminton Bonanza is an open badminton event aimed at social players who play for fun but would like a chance to play and meet different people, and low to medium level league players.

Bonanza tournaments are also used as a stepping stone to county organised open tournaments for league players who wish to advance to a more competitive level.

Here at the Hatters Hostel in Birmingham we can’t wait to see some familar faces that stayed with us in March for the All England Championships.

This five piece from Kansas City have been an influential force on the emo/punk scenes and come to the UK to celebrate the 10th Anniversary Edition of their critically acclaimed album ‘Something To Write Home About’.

Since we’re such big Get up Kids fans here in Hatters we’re offering beds for £8 on the night when you present your ticket at reception.

So that’s a Gig, Bed & Light breakfast for £20. Not bad at all these days in the current economic whatever…

And if that’s not enough there’s a bar 2 minutes from the hostel serving £1 pound drinks ’til 2am and hosted by Kerrang DJs…
